Lewdown Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets

Match report Match Report.
In a tense, low scoring affair Lewdown came out on top over a youthful Cornwood side. Winning the toss, Cornwood elected to bat and the Lewdown bowling attack, now getting a reputation for "you miss, I hit" cricket, again showed that being able to bowl consistent line and length pays off. Peter Lever's wise words ringing in their ears, Corwood were made to work for every run. With nothing to hit from excellent opening spells combined with shrewd field placings from skipper Ewen, the scorers were not kept busy. pressure building, Staddon succumb to late movement from Fogerty as he shouldered arms to one that came back and clipped off stump. Richardson offered some resistance with 12 but relentless accuracy from all the Lewdown bowlers and a high standard of fielding, ended up with the stumps being hit 8 times with only a solitary run out. Skipper R. Rickard played an excellent innings, ending up with 44 not out but with wickets falling regularly at the other end, the target set was 79. All the Lewdown bowlers performed but Boother and Fogerty who kept the top order at bay and Hatton taking 4 wickets, deserve special mention. In reply, an early run out and a fine hat-trick in the middle order from E. Staddon made things interesting but in the fading light, Thomas "Belstone wonder-boy" Boother kept his nerve to see Lewdown home with 3 overs remaining and 5 wickets in hand. Fogerty was the pick of the Lewdown batting, opening and carrying his bat with 20 not out with Hodgetts (17) and Hatton (13) making useful contributions. As now expected, Hodgetts was sharp behind the stumps and spectators and umpires were again impressed by the hard but sporting nature of the cricket being played in this league which is a credit to both sides. Due to many rain postponements, Lewdown have been unlucky not have made the cut for the Devon Club cup competition but are now rightly seen as the team to beat in the Palladium League and are climbing towards the top of the division.
