Uplyme & Lyme Regis v Lewdown Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 25 Jul 2009 at 14.00
Lewdown Cricket Club Won by 9 wickets
Match report
Lewdown made the long journey to Uplyme on this rare dry day hoping to maintain their push for promotion after three weeks of no cricket at all due to the poor 'barbecue summer' weather.
On arrival a soft and very grassy wicket greeted them with the pressure on skipper Charlie Hughes to win the toss, this he did and had no hesitation in asking the home team to bat first. Opening bowlers Phil Yeo and Ben Williams both bowled well despite the slow pitch with Yeo making the early breakthrough but it was the introduction of medium pacer Kris Harris, supported at the other end by Charlie Hughes, that the Uplyme batsmen struggled with, from 31-1 after 11 overs they were reduced to 58-6 after 26. A small recovery followed until left arm spinner Ad Clements (who the next day was laid up with swine flu)struck twice and Harris twice more, one a run out. All bowlers had done as asked by pitching the ball up and not bowling four balls and with a seasons best of just 11 extras, Uplyme were all out for 118. Kris Harris finishing with fine figures of 5-28 and Ad Clements 2-21.
Patience seemed to be the key in Lewdown's reply but it started poorly with Harris going for a duck, Jack Skuse joined Mevan Porage at the crease and after a few hairy moments early on both began to look more comfortable. Sri Lankan Porage had obviously decided attack was the best form of defence and punished anything a little short or full and raced to his 50 with just 63 on the board. There were to be no more breakthrough's for Uplyme and no let up in the scoring with Porage finishing on 83 n.o in just 65 balls and Skuse, who batted with maturity and patience, 22 n.o, Lewdown reaching the target with 21 overs to spare.
This was a great result for Lewdown after the recent dissapointments and the 20 points gained keep them in second spot in the league. This Saturday home to Babbacombe.
