Match report Lewdown travelled to Yelverton with high hopes of returning from Dartmoor with a victory but came away with just 5 points after a lively and competetive encounter against their 4th placed opposition.
Yelverton won the toss and asked Lewdown to bat on a wicket with variable bounce. Openers Kris Harris(27) and Ed Squire(28) started well and got Lewdown to 59 in the first 10 overs, from here on it all went wrong for Lewdown's batsmen, Squire was bowled by a slower ball and Harry Geering was given out caught at slip even though the ball appeared to have pitched in front of the fielders hands, next over Harris was caught and Lewdown were 59-3. Wickets began to fall at regular intervals with only Justin Gliddon(29)offering much resistance. Lewdown were all out for 144 with a massive 15 overs to go.
Lewdown's bowlers had a real go at trying to defend the small total set, 2 early wickets saw the home side at 29-2 before Loze and Bennett put on 39 for the 3rd wicket, Lewdown skipper Charlie Hughes took 2 wickets in an over to send Loze(23) and West(0) back to the pavilion and at 72-4 were still in with a chance. After a break for rain opening bowler Phil Yeo started to work up a head of steam and got 2 more quick wickets with the batsmen unable to cope with the short ball, 99-6 and it was game on.
After another rain delay Yelverton captain Jez Stokes decided to up the tempo and went after anything that was pitched up, this paid off for him as the ball flew, mainly off the edge, to the boundary and he quickly rattled up 30 runs to see Yelverton home in the 35th over.
A dissapointing result for Lewdown but they gave it good go and with a bit more luck could have got a result. Fortunately for Lewdown they stay second in the league as Hatherleigh slipped up at Whitchurch.
