Lewdown Cricket Club 1st XI v Bideford on Sat 06 Aug 2011 at 14.00
Lewdown Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets
Match report
Lewdown welcomed Bideford to the Recreation Field knowing that if results went their way promotion could be secured with 4 games to play.
Winning the toss, Lewdown elected to bowl first on what looked a belter of a wicket, the usual early breakthough did not materialise as a couple of good early chances were not taken, it was the 12th over when the first wicket was taken by Phil Yeo, quickly followed by another in the next Rob Mutch over, this brought the Bidefird no.4, Will Barratt, to the crease to join SA player Mike Young with the score on 37-2, what followed over the next 22 overshas not been seen this season against Lewdown, several dropped catches and some good batting by these two young players produced a century partnership and at 140-2 with 12 overs to go a score well in excess of 200 was on the cards, the introduction of spin from Dave Ball got the double breakthrough that Lewdown had patiently waited for by removing both Young and Barratt, Mark Jordan also picked up a wicket in between and in a flash the Bideford were 147-5, Rob Mutch was brought back into the attack and with Jordan finding his good recent form, wickets fell regularly and Bideford were bowled out 169, the last 8 wickets falling for just 29 runs, Mutch 3-34, Jordan 3-36 and Ball 2-12.
After another quality Pauline Geering tea it was time for the Lewdown batsmen to have a bat on what was probably the best wicket at Lewdown this season, the chase however, got off to a terrible start when the in form Harry Geering was needlessly run out without facing a ball, Ant Weeks joined Dave Ball and scored 13 before mis timing a drive, Lewdown were 22-2 and it was game on, Ball and Rob Mutch started to rebuild with caution but soon started scoring freely with Mutch in particular hitting some big shots, the pair put on 90 for the 3rd wicket before Ball was bowled, at 145 -3 Mutch was caught with just 25 runs required and it was left to Carl Weeks and Mark Jordan to finish the job with 9 overs to spare.
Another 20 points and their unbeaten record intact puts Lewdown 76 points in front of 3rd placed Hatherleigh and 56 points ahead of 2nd placed Clyst Hydon with just 80 points to play for, 4 points this Saturday away against Kingsbridge will ensure promotion to the 'B' division in 2012.
