Lewdown Cricket Club 1st XI v Clyst Hydon on Sat 02 Jul 2011 at 14.00
Lewdown Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets
Match report
Lewdown 1st XI reached the seasons half way point in style and unbeaten after a convincing victory over second placed Clyst Hydon, extending thier lead at the top of the table to 39 points.
A glorious day at the Recreation Field welcomed Clyst and after winning the toss perhaps played a part in thier decision to bat first in the warm conditions. the Clyst opening pair found run scoring difficult against the accuracy Kris Harris and the pace of Rob Mutch, reaching just 52 runs after the first 20 overs, this built a little pressure and with the score on 78 a good pick up and throw from Mutch accounted for opener Sutton, being run out for 39, skipper Charlie Hughes followed up this breakthrough immediatley, bowling no3 who shouldered arms to a straight one, wickets fell at regular intervals thereafter with Hughes, aided by some good catching in the deep, picking up his first 5 for in some time and finishing with figures of 5-43, Mutch 2-17 off 13 overs was again a constant threat, Dave Ball and Peter Cooper also getting themselves a wicket each, Clyst Hydon finishing all out for 146. The only poor point, and Clysts top scorer of 44, was extras with a hugely dissapointing 30 wides.
Lewdown's innings started poorly, last weeks centurian, Harry Geering, being given out LBW first ball to one that the bowler after the match admitted was missing leg by some distance, Kris Harris and Jack Skuse, showing off his new Wombat bat, put on 34 for the second wicket before both falling in the same over to the lively Haturusingha, Skuse scoring 25. At 42-3 Clyst were well in the game with two new batsmen Dave Ball and Mark Jordan at the crease, both these players showed graet concentration and composure under the barrage of banter from the Clyst players, putting on 91 for the 4th wicket, Mark Jordan being the man out for a superb 50, with just 15 runs required it was left to Ball and Mutch to finish the job, Mutch scoring the winning runs with a massive 6 and Ball falling just short of his half century on 42 n.o.
A great team performance and another 20 points to the total. Next week Lewdown are away to Seaton.
