Lewdown Cricket Club Blues U11's v Yelverton Hurricanes on Tue 18 May 2010 at 18.00
Lewdown Cricket Club Lost 19 runs
Match report
The Blues came close to pulling off a major shock when just losing to a very strong Yelverton team. Fielding 5 West Devon players and the Devon opening bowler, Yelverton were strong.
To make matters worse, 5 of the Blues team only just got to the fixture in time due to their winning exertions in the days kwik cricket festival at Plympton.
Bowling first, Leon Horn and Nick Smith bowled with good discipline, restricting the batters. Their frustration soon showed and in trying a quick single to Callum Worth, were undone by a quite brilliant pick up and bullet throw, knocking down the stumps and running out the batter.
Tiredness was evident with some uncharacteristic sloppy fielding, but tidy bowling restricted Yelverton to 211 after 16 runs. However, 29 runs were added in the last 4 overs, in setting 241 to win. Callum 4-0-12-3, Leon 4-0-8-1, Finn 4-0-20-1 and Nick 4-0-28-1 with 2 run outs.
With so many West Devon players on both sides, there was a tension in the air and Devon bowler Dunlop bowled with great pace against the Blues openers, hitting Matt Owen on the knee forcing his retirement. Wickets fell steadily, with only Nick, Leon and Callum not losing their wicket. However, the steady accumulation of runs meant that with 4 overs remaining, the Blues only needed 7 runs to win. It was not to be, as a good ball dismissed Adam Creasey, and with the -8 runs, the mentaility changed, and so with it the outcome of the game.
Yelverton won by 19 runs, but some fine performances by some very tired boys!
