Lewdown Cricket Club Lewdown Blues U11 v Plymstock on Wed 28 Apr 2010 at 18.00
Lewdown Cricket Club Lost by 11 runs
Match report
In their first ever match in the Palladium League, Lewdown Blues Under 11’s welcomed Plymstock to a sunny Recreation Field.
Having lost the toss, the very young Lewdown team were nervous about their first experience of competitive cricket. Finn Beldon and Matt Owen played sensibly against the Plymstock opening pace attack, with Jacob Brown and Sophie Batstone doing a fine job as next pair in. The introduction of Leon Horn and Callum Worth, both of whom have recently been selected to represent West Devon in the pending Devon Festival, took the game to the opposition. Leon hit his first ball for 4 and both boys ran excellently between the wickets. In their 5 overs they scored 37 runs without losing a wicket, a fine effort for the two 10 years olds! Adam Creasey and Nick Smith held the innings together at the end, allowing Lewdown to post a slightly below par 224 in their 20 overs.
All of the Lewdown players have enjoyed a busy off season, practising with Club coaches in Okehampton every other week. The Team Manager reminded them of this and encouraged them to trust in their skills and to enjoy the second half of the game. The message certainly got through! First ball, Leon Horn bowled the Plymstock opening bat. Nick Smith bowled his usual immaculate line and length, picking up 2 wickets in his first 3 overs, i a catch behind by debutant Jacob Brown – a great effort. Captain, Callum Worth replaced Horn up the hill and bowling with good pace took 2 wickets, hitting middle stump on both occasions. After 11 overs, Plymstock were on -19, but the game was far from over. Opposition captain Cowan, proceeded to hit the ball to all parts, but the Lewdown bowlers stuck to their task, with Finn Beldon bowling particularly well at the death.
It was not to be, and Plymstock batted sensibly in the final over to secure a 10 run victory. The young Lewdown team fielded and bowled superbly, obviously enjoy playing together, evidenced by the exuberant celebrations when taking wickets. Fin Beldon, Matt Owen, Jacob Brown and Sophie Batstone will never forget their first competitive match and should be very proud of their performance.
Next match home versus Ivybridge on Sunday 2 May, 10.30 start.
